On Friday Sept. 17, Rock City’s Velvet Lounge will welcomes back 14 Strings. The music will play from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rock City Books & Coffee, 328 Main St.

The 14 Strings Jazz Trio features Jon Luoma on viola, Harry Richter on guitar and Doreen Conboy on bass. They play jazz standards, original compositions and tunes with Latin and European flavor. The trio gets its name and sound from the unusual combination of viola, bass and guitar. Innovative arrangements and provocative rhythms give contemporary appeal to jazz standards, soulful ballads, Latin bossas and sambas plus a twist of Django Reinhardt and Svend Assmussen.

To round out the set lists, Luoma adds original compositions. An artist and illustrator, Luoma studied in the Jazz and Contemporary Music program at University of Maine in Augusta. Richter makes and repairs violins and repairs other stringed instruments at his shop, Somerset Violins in Waterville; Luoma plays a viola made by Harry. Richter also studied jazz guitar at UMA. Conboy has toured and performed with many Maine bands on bass and cello and works as a painter and filmmaker.

As usual, there is no cover charge but tipping the musicians is highly encouraged. For more information on this and other events at Rock City, call 594-4123.
