Due to popular demand and to the fact that we still have plenty of cats and kittens at the shelter and a steady stream still coming in, we will be extending our “Name Your Price” Adult Cat Adopt-A-Thon where you tell us how much your adoption fee is for an adult cat. Thanks to the promotion former pet picks like Sparkplug, Prospect and Tiffy have found homes along with many other lucky cats. Dozens of kittens have found homes too at the amazing price of only $45.

As with all our adoptions, all cats will be spayed/neutered, tested, de-wormed, receive age appropriate vaccinations, a rabies shot, flea treatment and a first free exam with a participating veterinarian. Adoption policies apply.  Stop by the shelter today and visit with our friendly felines.  Your new best friend is waiting.

Our pet pick of the week is Sugarplum. Sugarplum came to us as a stray momma cat with kittens quite awhile ago. Her pregnancy took a toll on her and she became quite ill. When she refused to eat and was becoming too thin we discovered that she would eat kitten food. That did the trick. She regained her health and is doing well. Unfortunately, she gained more than just her health she also gained weight on the kitten food. A little too much weight which is why she is now affectionately called Sugar plump. Just as with humans, it isn’t healthy for cats to be overweight so she is on a “diet” and making progress. What she needs is a loving home that can regulate her food intake, something that is challenging in a free roaming, free feeding shelter cat community. She’s a beautiful dilute tortoiseshell cat who loves giving and getting attention, rubbing and nudging the legs of visitors to get their attention. Good with kids, cats and dogs, she will make a wonderful family pet.

We’re gearing up for our 13th annual Fur ‘n’ Foliage Dog Walk on Saturday, Sept. 25.  We hope our supporters are out there collecting pledge money to help us help the animals. There’s still plenty of time. We have fabulous prizes for the top three adult pledge collectors and a special prize for the top youth pledge collector aged 12 years or younger. Download a pledge sheet at our Web site www.hskcME.org or stop by the shelter to pick one up. Ask friends, relatives, co-workers and businesses to sponsor you as you walk for a great cause, helping the homeless animals in our community. If you’d like to help out and volunteer your time at this fun family event or at the shelter contact our volunteer coordinator Joan to learn more orangehondashadow@yahoo.com or call the shelter at 594-2200. Our dog walk is being sponsored by Harbor Road Veterinary Hospital, Rockland Animal Hospital, Loyal Biscuit Co., Sargent Lock & Safe, Sea Street Graphics, Safe Harbor Confections, Myrtle Street Tavern, All Creatures Veterinary Hospital, Dominos Pizza, Pet Quarters and Brooks Trap Mill. There are still more sponsorship opportunities available. For more information contact Tracy at humane@midcoast.com.
