The sun shone brightly as 82 people gathered to celebrate the 89th Carter family reunion on July 4 at the home of Phil and Mona Pinkham in Jefferson. Descendants of Charles Everett and Jane Belle Carter traveled from towns in Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Georgia to enjoy “an old fashioned picnic” along with a dessert contest, bingo, a pie eating contest, an auction and guessing jars.

Prizes and gifts were given as follows — Eldest Man: Pat Bowden of Warren, Eldest Woman: Doris Rosgrove of Winterville, Ga., and Youngest: twins Tyler and Caleb Waldrop of Jefferson. The dessert contest winner was Jeff Waldrop of Jefferson. The pie eating contest winners were first place, Rachael Bowden, age 9, of Waldoboro; second place, Benny Norton-Brann, age 10, of Mt. Vernon, and third place, Anthony Bernardi, age 11, of Rockland. Guessing jar winners were Ralph Johnson of Portland and Glendon Simmons of Hampton, N.H. The peanut bag winner was Abby McLaughlin of Augusta.

Next year’s 90th reunion will be held at the home of Pat and Flora Bowden in Warren with a lobster bake, a name tag contest and a lemonade contest.
