Rick Sawyer, proprietor of Fernwood Nursery & Gardens, will present a talk titled “Ferns and Mosses” on Tuesday, Aug. 31 at noon at Merryspring Nature Center in Camden.

Is there a bare shady spot in the garden in need of planting? Interested in shade plants but not quite sure where to turn? Then join Sawyer as he explains the practical uses of ferns and mosses in the garden. He will describe several species in detail, illuminating their pros, cons and proper uses. Several varieties of plants will be available to see, and any and all questions will be happily answered.

Sawyer has been in the gardening business for over 30 years with his small nursery, Fernwood Nursery & Gardens. He specializes in plants for woodland and shade gardens, focusing on natives and their counterparts from around the world that can be grown here in Maine. He also grows a large selection of hostas, many of which he has hybridized himself. Low maintenance and fun sensible gardening is stressed at Fernwood Nursery located at 58 North Ridge Road in Montville.

Merryspring members and all children attend talks free, and there is a charge of $5 for non-members. Merryspring is a member-supported nonprofit nature education center and park located at the end of Conway Road just off Route 1 by the Hannaford shopping plaza in Camden.
