On Tuesday, Aug. 31 at 6:30 p.m., Belfast Free Library will host a talk titled Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms of New England and Eastern Canada by David Spahr.

Spahr, who lives in Washington, is an author, naturalist, photographer and edible forest farmer. His recent book “Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms of New England and Eastern Canada” was released in July 2009. This beautifully illustrated guidebook provides specific, easy-to-understand information on finding, collecting, identifying and preparing the safer and more common edible and medicinal mushroom species of New England and Eastern Canada.

A trained commercial photographer, Spahr combines his mycological expertise and photographic skill to produce an attractive and detailed overview of his subject. Based on decades of practical experience and research, the book is written in a clear and forthright style that avoids the dry, generic descriptions of most field guides.

Spahr has collected edible mushrooms for 37 years. He is a member of the Maine Mycological Society and is on the Maine Mushroom Task Force developing rules for the foraging and sale of wild mushrooms.

This program is free and open to the public. For more information, call 338-3884, ext. 10.
