Gov. John Baldacci proclaimed Wednesday, Aug. 25 as Moxie Day at the Union Fair.

Honoring the Official Soft Drink of the State of Maine and the Union born inventor of the beverage, Dr. Augustin Thompson, the proclamation also recognizes Thompson’s Civil War service. It will be read in the Moxie wing of the Matthews Museum at 1 p.m.

The museum houses the nation’s largest public display of Moxie memorabilia and the 32-foot-tall Moxie bottle stand, according to George Gross, president of the museum. The museum will serve free samples of Moxie throughout the day provided by Coca Cola of Northern New England and will sell Moxie related items such as T-shirts to raise funds to support the museum. The Matthews Museum is located on the Union Fairgrounds and admission is free to fair attendees all week during the fair.
