The Damariscotta Area 4th Sunday Sacred Harp Singing will take place Sunday, Aug. 22 from 2 to 5 p.m. at St. Paul’s Union Chapel, Dutchneck Road. This is a participatory event, not a performance. There will be a potluck supper, so bring a dish to pass.

As always, the group welcomes beginners, curious friends and passing strangers to join in song. The singing is primarily from “The Sacred Harp,” 1991 Denson edition, a shape note tune book that has been in continuous publication with periodic revisions since 1844. The music consists of hymns, fugue-ing tunes, anthems and other songs in a style rooted in Colonial New England, popular in Maine up until the Civil War and in areas of the rural South and West up to the present day. Books will be available available to borrow or purchase.
