Union Fair will run for eight days, Aug. 21-28. Opening ceremonies Saturday will be at 11:30 a.m. at Sherman Park, preceded by a concert by the Midcoast Community Band at 10:30 a.m. Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will be joined by the Knox County Sheriff’s Honor Guard for the raising of the flag of the United States and brief remarks thanking veterans by a representative of the U.S. military.

“Thank You Veterans!” is the theme for the Union Fair parade, which will pass by the reviewing stand at the Racetrack Grandstand led by the Knox County Sheriff’s Honor Guard. The grand marshal of the parade will be veteran Walter Rich, who served as a trustee and secretary of the fair. He will ride in a 1943 World War II Jeep.

The 2009 reigning State of Maine Wild Blueberry Queen, Lakeisha Allen, and the 10 princesses vying for the 2010 Wild Blueberry Queen title will ride in convertibles, waving to the crowd along the way and at the grandstand. There will be more than 30 floats seeking the prizes for the best floats in each of the four categories: commercial, nonprofit, youth and other. Prizes in each category are $100 for first, $50 for second and $25 for third.

After the parade, there will be an exhibition of public safety and health vehicles and representatives on the track near Sherman Park. Late entries will be honored. Contact Lyle Creamer at 233-2979 to join the parade.
