Mid-Coast School of Technology Adult Education celebrated its first QMED class graduation on July 29. The successful completion of this 145-hour Qualified Member of the Engine Department training marked the inauguration of a new U.S. Coast Guard-approved course in the Midcoast.

Developed by a dedicated group of active and retired professional mariners from Maine, this program is unique to Maine. Four of the five graduates plan to use their new knowledge to pursue maritime employment on merchant vessels. The fifth is using this training as professional development toward an instructor role.

The Qualified Member of the Engine Department course is a combination of rigorous classroom learning, practical experience in steam and diesel engine rooms, and computer simulation experience. After meeting sea service requirements, the graduates will be able to sit for the formal Coast Guard examination and receive their certification. The program is working closely with Military Sea Lift Command to provide placement for program graduates.

MCST Adult Education has scheduled its next QMED course to begin Feb. 7, 2011. Interested students may request an application and information by calling 596-7752.
