For the weekend beginning Friday, Aug. 13, a large selection of handwoven rugs will be on display at Ducktrap Bay Trading Co., 37 Bay View St. There will be an opening reception Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., during which refreshments will be served.

For 40 years, the Ovambo weavers of Farm Peperkorrel in Namibia, Africa, have been directed by German-born textile designer Volker Berner. Berner’s sister-in-law, Meike Sweatman of Stowe, Vt., who is the distributor of the rugs in the United States, will be at Ducktrap Bay Trading Co. Friday through Sunday, Aug. 13 through 15 to exhibit and discuss the unique creations.

The rugs come in a wide variety of patterns, colors and sizes, from narrow runners to 10-by-12 foot area rugs. They are woven from hand-dyed Karukal wool, which is one of the strongest natural fibers for making rugs and carpets.

Rugs will be on display all three days from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sweatman will be available at intervals throughout the weekend to answer questions. For more information, call 236-9568 or visit ducktrapbay.com.
