New Era Gallery, 60 Main St., will present a summer group show featuring work by François Deschamps, Katharine White, Kitty Wales and Herbert Parsons. The show will open Saturday, Aug. 7 with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. and an artist talk at 4:30 p.m.

Deschamps is a noted photographer and book artist. Using photographs, found objects and photographs of found objects, Deschamps’ witty and intelligent images challenge the viewer’s perceptions of reality.

For years, White’s work focused on the effects of light on the Mississippi river as it flowed through New Orleans. In 2008, she moved her home and studio to Vinalhaven, where she now happily focuses on the effects of light on the large saltwater pond outside her windows.

Sculptor Wales’ new work is based on the mechanisms found in discarded animated holiday toys. Using painted and varnished cardboard and miscellaneous found objects, she has created moving animals and figures. Matthew Miner, Wales’ husband and collaborator, has created beautifully crafted wooden stage sets on which the animated figures enact their stories.

Parsons works in oils, pastels and charcoal.  His charcoals evoke the essential elements of rock and water that define the islands of Vinalhaven and North Haven.

The show will run through Sept. 1. Summer gallery hours are Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call 863-9351 or visit
