On Friday, Aug. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m., Rhonda Nordstrom will host a reception for artist Susan Beebe at Rheal Day Spa on Main Street, where Beebe’s paintings are on display.

Oil paintings of roadside oaks and island white pines, gouaches of a woman reading and of a bouquet on a charcoal burner’s table in Spain, and a relaxed nude in colored pencil all contribute to a peaceful mood in Rheal’s lounge. The seven pieces on display were painted from life, on site, and all have about them a sense of direct experience and a sense of well-being.

“Susan’s obvious love of nature and trees in particular fits with our commitment to sustainable living,” said Nordstrom.

Beebe studied painting, drawing and sculpture at Williams College and at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She has shown at the Nan Mulford Gallery, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Lincoln Street Center for the Arts, the Williams Club of New York, the University of Maine at Augusta, Jonathan Frost Gallery and Harbor Square Gallery. She has taught at the Lincoln Street Center for the Arts and the Farnsworth Art Museum and has been a visiting artist at many schools.

Beebe teaches studio art at the Watershed School in Rockland, and she has led groups of students in creating murals for the Camden-Rockport Middle School and the Rockland Public Library. She currently is at work with a group of local high school students painting murals on exterior walls at the Rockland Wastewater Treatment Facility.

Beebe has also been active in protecting trees from excessive cutting in Warren, Camden and Rockland. Among other art projects, she is working on an extensive series of paintings, prints and sculptures of birds of the Boreal Forest.
