The Cushing Historical Society will meet Thursday, Aug. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at its meetinghouse on Hathorn Point Road in Cushing. The program is titled “Barns!” The speaker, David Shaub, is president of the Union Historical Society. The public is welcome; admission is free.

Shaub has been interested in old barns since his childhood on an antique farm in southern Rhode Island. As a member of the Union Historical Society, he has photographed and cataloged his town’s old barns and other outbuildings. In 2003, he and Ruth E. Shaw produced a book, “Bridges to the Past,” which contains Union history and many photographs of “then and now” buildings.

“Barns in original condition are few,” Shaub said. “They change over time. Yet Midcoast Maine has a treasure in the form of good working buildings, worthy of thoughtful maintenance and pride.”

He will provide definitions and illustrations of various barn styles and architecture, and a question and answer period. Local residents with experience of their own old barns are invited to join in the discussion. For more information call 354-6351.
