Old Point Comfort Gallery will hold its annual studio open house from Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 7 and 8 from noon to 5 p.m. at the gallery, at 28 Pitcher Road just off Route 220.

Owner Sara Hotchkiss will display rugs and wall hangings in all sizes and colors in the gallery/showroom. They are handwoven of beautiful cotton fabrics and a durable cabled cotton warp. Some rugs show striated color blends similar to the rag rug tradition; others are highly patterned with stars, stripes, leaves, flowers and other geometric designs using tapestry to weave the shapes.

Hotchkiss and Old Point Comfort Gallery are featured in the fall issue of Country Gardens, a Better Homes and Gardens Special Interest Publication. The article, titled “A Weaver’s Garden,” describes the beautiful gardens at the gallery and tells how Hotchkiss derives inspiration from her gardens when designing her rugs and wall hangings. Her work also is influenced by the colors of her flowers and the combination of colors the garden offers.

The article, written by Julie Martens, is accompanied by eight photographs by Lynn Karlin of Belfast. Karlin captures the spirit of Hotchkiss’ work by photographing weavings hung midst the flowers in the garden. The magazine is on the stands in August and Hotchkiss will have copies available at the open house.

Hotchkiss’ work has been displayed in many exhibits in Maine and throughout the United States including the American Craft Museum in New York City, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and the Portland Museum of Art. She has won numerous awards and her work has been featured in many publications ranging from Better Homes and Gardens and House Beautiful to Country Living and Architectural Digest.

Hotchkiss also has small selections of rugs at Island Grocery, South Bristol; Walpole Barn; Casual Interiors, Boothbay Harbor; and CRAFT Gallery, Rockland.
