Marcella Mace Christensen of the city’s funky Mace’s Clothing and Jewelry Store is expanding her repertoire and bringing her art to the public at the Rockland Art Market.

The Rockland Art Market runs Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (weather permitting) at the Mildred Merrill Park, across from Time Out Pub.  The Rockland Farmers’ Market runs concurrently at Harbor Park.

While she paints colorful designs on canvas floorcloths and decorates furniture with whimsical fish and other patterns, Christensen is really excited about paper — specifically, paste paper. Paste paper is a process of surface decoration using homemade paste colored with water-soluble paints or pigments. The paste is applied to heavy paper and then designs are worked into it while the paste is wet.

Christensen has even launched the Art Incubator above Mace’s, located at 367 Main St., to teach this technique. After teaching in public schools for 15 years, she also will be giving other classes focused on book arts. Paste papers can be used to decorate journal and book covers, make cards and construct luminaries, which she sells at the market.

Other offerings by Art Market members include wooden bowls, marquetry and furnishings; polymer clay jewelry and sculptures; fine art photography; watercolor and acrylic paintings; paper and fiber arts; wooden turkey calls; teddy bears made from antique quilts; and funky hats and costume wear.
