M. Elaine Hiller died May 16, 2010, after a long illness.

Born Aug. 19, 1936, in Arlington, Mass., she was the daughter of Herbert “Rab” and Mary “Jeanne” McKenzie Hurd. Elaine was educated in the Arlington school system. She married Paul A. Ligor in Massachusetts. The couple made their home in Arlington where they raised their five children. She worked at Symmes Hospital, and was also a constable for the town of Arlington for many years.

In June 1982, Elaine married Stanley A. Hiller at the Children’s Chapel in Rockport. Stanley was a master chief engineer with the U.S. Coast Guard. Elaine and Stan traveled together to several ports where he was stationed. She enjoyed her participation with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Following Stan’s retirement, they returned to Rockport. Stan and Elaine were both actively involved with the Rockland Lodge of Elks and American Legion Post 1. Elaine was dedicated to her family. She loved family gatherings and spending time with her grandchildren. She especially found great joy in cooking. Her hobbies and interests were reading, puzzles, board games and movies.

She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley A. Hiller; her brother, Donald H. Hurd; and her grandson, Paul D. Ligor.

Elaine is survived by her children, Paul Ligor Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Denmark, Lauren Ligor of North Berwick, John Ligor and his wife, Darlene, of Tyngsboro, Mass., Lynne Spugnardi and her husband, Dino, of Falmouth and Douglas Ligor and his wife, Casey, of Bedford, N.H.; her stepsons, Steven Hiller and his wife, Dodie, of Thomaston and Richard Hiller and his wife, Pamela, of Rockland; her grandchildren, Jason Ligor, Nicole Ligor, Jenna Ligor, Julia Spugnardi, Samuel Spugnardi and Emerson Ligor; as well as her step-grandchildren, Stephanie Hiller, Shawn Hiller, Christopher Hiller and Jessica Hiller.

Family and friends are invited to visit Wednesday, May 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, May 20 from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, May 20 at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 150 Broadway in Rockland. Private interment will be held at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Augusta at a later date.
