Harland R. “Rocky” Priestley Jr., 86, died May 18, 2010. He was born Sept. 8, 1923, in New London, Conn., a son of Harland R. Priestley Sr. and Doris (Jepson) Priestley.

Rocky graduated from Stoneham High School in Massachusetts. He met the love of his life, Eleanor F. Tibbetts, and they were married in Stoneham, Mass. They were married for 65 years.

Rocky furthered his education, and worked hard to obtain his master electrician license through home studying of computers, correspondence courses and then completing the necessary apprenticeship hours required.

He worked as a school custodian in SAD 50 for 26 years from 1960 to 1986 at St. George School in Tenants Harbor. From 1988 to 1993 he was an electrician, in engineering and sales, for NEWCO & Light Touch Division in Rockport. He later worked as a self-employed master electrician from 1993 to 1996. His last employment was with the CCAP/RSVP Program in Rockland, working as a program assistant.

A longtime member of the St. George Fire Department, he served in many positions, including assistant fire chief for 20 years. Just recently, Rocky was presented with his 50-year member pin for his lengthy service. In the mid-1960s, he was part of the organizational group that created the St. George Volunteer Ambulance squad, on which he volunteered for over 45 years. He was very active in the Wiley’s Corner First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, working with youth during summer Bible school and visiting shut-ins.

He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, walking, fishing and choral singing. He loved ballroom dancing at Echo Hill and the Blue Goose. He also loved working on the computer, doing church bulletins and newsletters, as well as helping those in need.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Tibbetts Priestley, of Camden; his daughters, Brenda Bratley of Virginia Beach, Va., and Regina Priestley of Spruce Head; a son, Harland R. Priestley III of Belmont; his grandchildren, Lisa Hall of Virginia Beach, Va., Jeffry Elwell of Spruce Head, Katrina Smith and Elizabeth Pickett, both of Virginia Beach, Va., and Kurt Priestley and Luke Priestley, both of Belmont; his great-grandchildren, David Hall, Dakota, Jack and Joshua Elwell, and Greyson and Connor Smith.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 22 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of St. George, at Wiley’s Corner, Snow’s Point Road, in St. George.
