A car went off the road across from the Ledges Motel in Rockport at about 12:30 p.m. on May 15, snapping off small trees and undergrowth as it plowed into the ditch.

Driver Laurie Smith, 24, of Bangor fell asleep at the wheel and her 2004 Chevy Cavalier  drifted off the road, according to Officer Dana Smith of the Rockport Police Department.

She was not injured and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The officer said the driver was fortunate that the car did not drift into oncoming traffic. He attributed her escape from injury in part to her wearing her seat belt.

Police estimate the crash caused $2,000 in damage to the vehicle.

Route 1 was down to one lane of traffic and was briefly closed completely as the car was being towed out of the ditch.
