Vinalhaven made the long bus trip to Buckfield May 11 to play two baseball games with the host Bucks, with the contests holding different outcomes. The Vikings suffered a tough 3-2 loss in the first game and secured an 8-4 win in the second.

In Western Class D, Buckfield and Vinalhaven both are 1-4 with 1.4881 Heal Points and ranked sixth and seventh respectively. Rangeley (3-2, 12.3626 points) leads the region.

In Tuesday’s first game, Vinalhaven suffered a two-run loss despite strong pitching.

“We just couldn’t get out of the gates very well,” said Vinalhaven coach Matt Slivinsky. He said his team fell because it made mental errors and could not capitalize on its opportunities.

Dana Tolman took the mound for the Vikings and gave up five hits and four walks, with 11 strikeouts. Isaac Smith pitched for the hosts and allowed two hits and three walks, with 12 strikeouts.

Nathan Hopkins keyed the Viking offense with a hit, run and RBI.

For Buckfield, Trevor Averill (hit, run), Isaac Smith (2 hits, run) and Allen Hendrick (run) led the way.

Buckfield made three errors and Vinalhaven two.

In the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader, Vinalhaven got revenge for its earlier loss with a four-run win, which was made possible by strong all-around play.

Coach Slivinsky said the island pitchers teamed well and the entire squad performed better overall.

“We didn’t make as many errors in this game and we just swung our bats,” the coach said. “It was a much better game”

Steven Osgood, Hopkins and Bobby Beckman pitched for the Vikings. Osgood took the mound for three innings and allowed two hits and walks, with two strikeouts. Beckman threw the next two innings and gave up two hits and a walk, with three strikeouts. Finally, Hopkins finished the game, allowing a hit, with two strikeouts.

For Buckfield, Cody White pitched and allowed 10 hits and four walks, with eight strikeouts.

Offensively for the Vikings, Osgood (3 runs), Ryan Jones (2 runs), Tolman (run), Trey Warren (2 hits) and Hopkins (2 runs, 2 RBIs, double) led the charge.

For Buckfield, Allen Hendrick (2 hits), Jarek Boyd (run), Austin Dooley (run), Ethan Mckellar (run) and Isaac Smith (run) were the offensive leaders.
