School

No school Friday, May 14 as it’s a teacher workshop day. Step-up Night for rising 9th-graders (Camden Hills Regional High School Class of 2014!) and their parents will be held May 26 at the high school. Families and students will share a potluck meal, then students will break up into homeroom groups to tour the building, look over the Co-curricular Activities Fair and have an orientation session. University of Maine at Orono valedictorian

Congratulations to Amy Pottle Smith, valedictorian of the University of Maine at Orono Class of 2010. Read her story in this issue of The Herald Gazette; it’s an inspiration!

Signs of spring

Up on High Street the Hazens’ horse chestnut is blooming three weeks earlier than usual. The barn swallows returned, but a week later than normal, and so far, no hummingbirds up there.

Corelyn Senn reports a hummingbird on May 10, so they’re starting to arrive.

On a walk on the Cameron Mountain trail last week Wally spotted a painted trillium, lady slippers in bud and wild columbine blooming, the red and yellow kind. We also saw a hawk fly over with a mouse in its beak.

Missing chickens

Bill Kennedy, down on the shore, is missing two of his prize birds, a black and silver rooster and a black hen. Contact him at sssfarm@midcoast.com if you see them.
