At least three properties in the vicinity of Russell Avenue and Mechanic Street in Rockport were vandalized May 11 in a painting spree that also included street signs and roadways. In addition to the graffiti, at least one window was broken.

Assistant to the Chief of Police Craig Cooley said May 12 that the call came in shortly after 11 p.m. on May 11. He said police already have a couple of suspects and a witness reported seeing one of the individuals in action.

Properties hit by the vandalism included the Center for Maine Contemporary Art buildings on Mechanic and Union streets, and a mailbox on Russell Avenue. Cooley said street signs and roadways were also painted in the late-night vandalism spree.

Tom Young, whose mailbox was vandalized, said property owners had already painted over some of the graffiti by early the following morning.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information in regard to the incidents should call the Rockport Police Department at 236-2026.
