Verna E. Gargan, 94, beloved wife of William F. Gargan Jr., died, with her husband at her side, May 7, 2010, at her home.

Born in Thomaston on July 20, 1915, she was the daughter of Rufus and Delia Hart Libby. She attended local schools and enjoyed playing basketball at Thomaston High School. Verna left high school just prior to graduating in order to help support her family.

She first worked at Woolworth’s 5 & 10 in Rockland and later was devoted to raising her family.

On Jan. 15, 1967, she married William F. Gargan Jr. at Rockland Congregational Church. Since that time, Mr. and Mrs. Gargan have been active members of that church. She taught Sunday school at the church when it was in its original Main Street location and continued in that capacity when the church moved to the new Limerock Street edifice. She contributed her beautiful alto voice to the choir.

In earlier years she was a member of the Knox County Rifle Club, and received many trophies for her marksmanship, both locally and in state competitions.

A woman of many talents, she was an accomplished artist, painting primarily in oils. She enjoyed participating in and winning ribbons from shows at the lobster festival and Union Fair, where she displayed her art more than 16 years. She was also actively involved with shows up and down the East Coast from Maine to Florida. Knitting and crocheting were also talents she excelled at. Over the years she has crocheted more than 1,000 sailors hats, many of which her husband sold aboard his charter boat.

Her husband remembered that she was a wonderful cook. In her younger years she worked on her family’s farm in Jefferson, cooking for the hired hands.

For more than 30 years, with her husband, Mrs. Gargan spent winters in Arcadia, Fla. During that time they spent two weeks each year at Neptune’s Inn on Fort Myers Beach, where she made many lasting friendships.

She was predeceased by her twin sister, Wilma Huntley; a brother, Douglas Libby; and two daughters, Wendy and Marion.

Mrs. Gargan is survived by her husband, William F. Gargan Jr.; a daughter, Patricia Allan and her husband, David, of North Carolina; her sons, Daniel Gargan Sr. and his wife, Theresa, of South Thomaston and Randy Gargan and his wife, Marion, of Jefferson; 10 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 13 at 3 p.m. at Rockland Congregational Church, 180 Limerock St. Interment will be private.
