Norma L. Sawyer, 75, died May 7, 2010, with her family at her side.

Born in Rockland on Feb. 14, 1935, she was the eldest daughter of Samuel and Bessie McKinney Jackson. She attended school in Appleton, graduating with the class of 1953. She then attended Barrington Bible College in Barrington, R.I., earning a degree in elementary education. Mrs. Sawyer later did her student teaching at the University of Maine at Orono, and Wake Forest University in North Carolina. In the late 1950s, she traveled in northern Maine as a teacher with Child Evangelism Fellowship.

On Oct. 7, 1962, she married Merton Sawyer Jr. at the First Baptist Church in Rockland. The couple made their first home in South Hope for two years, before moving to Rockland where they have since resided.

Mrs. Sawyer worked for several years at North Atlantic Seafoods.

For many years she was an active member of South Hope Community Church and taught kindergarten at South Hope Christian School. More recently she attended Appleton Baptist Church. Her foremost concern was that all would hear the saving message of Jesus Christ. She always made her home open to anyone. Her children recalled that she always denied herself so that she could give to others.

She was predeceased by her husband, Merton, on Nov. 12, 2007; her siblings, Oliver Hamlin, Edwin “Coogie” Hamlin, Richard “Dicky” Hamlin, Neil Jackson, Estelle Barlow and Nathalie Hall.

Mrs. Sawyer is survived by her son, Merton R. Sawyer III and his wife, Kimberly, of Corinth; two daughters, Rebecca Pennington and her husband, Douglass Jr., of Appleton and Stephanie Koutsikos and her husband, Pano, of Lewiston; four brothers, Malcolm “Mack” Jackson and his wife, Dorothy, of South Thomaston, Charles Hamlin and his wife, Mona, of Houston, Texas, William Jackson and his wife, Carolyn, of Rockland and Paul Putnam and his wife, Helen, of Rockport; five sisters, Jean Adolphson and her husband, Arthur, of Hope, Flora Sawyer of Warren, Lenora Bunker and her husband, Buddy, of Whitefield, Lucille Bartlett and her husband, Donald, of Appleton and Anne Johnson and her husband, Ted, of Appleton; 11 grandchildren, Hannah, Sarah, Douglass, Cody, Aubrey, Sydney, Jeraimie, Leah, Brendon, Darcy and Alexis; one great-grandchild, Sawyer; as well as her grand-dog, William.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit Wednesday, May 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 13 at 11 a.m. at South Hope Community Church, Route 17 in Hope. Pastor Mark Adolphson will officiate. Interment will follow at Achorn Cemetery in Rockland.
