Jennie Tuomi Webster, 93, died May 9, 2010, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport after a brief illness. Born in Vinalhaven on April 27, 1917, she was the daughter of Oscar and Elina (Lahdenpaa) Tuomi. She was a 1935 graduate of Vinalhaven High School, earning the honor of being valedictorian of her class. She married Curtis M. Webster on June 12, 1938. She was a member of the Union Church of Vinalhaven and attended the Pleasant River Chapel. Mrs. Webster was a member of the Pleasant River Grange 492, and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Vinalhaven Historical Society.

Mrs. Webster was a very sweet and caring person. Her Finnish heritage was characterized through her stoic “sisu” personality and she was not one to complain. Babysitting and caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very important to Jennie, and those memories will forever be cherished by the family.

For the past year Jennie had resided at the Ivan Calderwood Homestead where she enjoyed doing puzzles, reading and bowling on the Wii. Her family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at the Homestead for their wonderful loving care and dedication. Jennie also thoroughly enjoyed the companionship of all the other residents and frequent visitors.

She is survived by her daughter, Lois Candage and her husband, Bob; four grandchildren, Scott Candage, Marc Candage and his wife, Karen, all of Vinalhaven, Laurie Hutchinson of Cushing and Phyllis Webster of Camden; her daughter-in-law, Cora Webster of Camden; seven great-grandchildren, Jennie Candage, Bethany Candage, Chelsea Webster, Athena Hutchinson, Heather Craney, Corissa Craney and Shane Craney; two sisters-in-law, Beth Webster and Lois Webster; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Curtis M. Webster, who died in 1981; her son, Curtis R. Webster; a brother, Frank Tuomi; and her sister, Elli.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 15 at 11 a.m. at Pleasant River Chapel in Vinalhaven, to be followed by a reception at the Ivan Calderwood Homestead. Memorial donations may be made to the Ivan Calderwood Homestead, P.O. Box 624, Vinalhaven, ME 04863. Arrangements are with the Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Camden.
