Our pet pick of the week is Walker. Walker is a very energetic 8-month-old neutered male Black Lab/hound mix. This happy-go-lucky hound is full of vim and vigor. No couch potatoes for this guy. He loves getting exercise and would make a wonderful hiking buddy. Walker likes car rides and playing in the water. A day chasing waves at the beach would be idyllic. He is housebroken and crate trained but would benefit from additional training to learn some focus and manners. Walker gets along with some dogs but isn’t trustworthy around cats. Older kids would be appropriate for this dog. He is still just a youngster and with a little direction and a lot of love will grow into a fine canine companion. If you are interested in Walker, stop by the shelter and take him for a walk and get to know his winning personality.

We are happy to report that Patty and Jack, two rambunctious little homeless puppies, have completed our K-9 corrections program and as newly trained dogs were quickly adopted into their own forever homes. For the past eight weeks they lived in prison with prisoner/trainers at the Bolduc Correctional Facility as part of our K-9 Corrections Program busy learning the basics: sit, stay, come, housebreaking and leash manners. Our program is a collaboration between Bolduc Correctional Facility and the HSKC to teach at-risk prisoners and at-risk homeless dogs the skills to become safe members of society. Selected dogs reside at the facility and receive ’round the clock attention and regular training. Professional dog trainer Marie Finnegan of K-9 Solutions Dog Training oversees the training, teaching the inmates training techniques. The inmate/dog handlers teach the dogs house manners, obedience and some tricks. The dogs, in turn, teach the inmate/handlers responsibility and dog-training skills they can use after release. Like any good program it costs money to run. You can show your support by making a donation specially earmarked K-9 Corrections. Two new shelter dogs will be selected soon to participate. You can follow their progress on their own Facebook page at facebook.com/K9Corrections.

Kitten season is fast approaching; we already have over 30 kittens in foster care. Once kitten season starts, adult cats are often overlooked and patiently wait weeks, sometimes months waiting for a home. To encourage people to open up their hearts and homes to these great felines we will be cutting our adult adoption fee in half for the month of May. Adopt any cat one year or older for the amazing fee of just $25.

On Saturday, May 22 we will be holding our annual Clean Up and Cook Out. All are invited to join the fun as we spruce up the place with a new coat of paint, weed the garden, groom the dog trails and the like. Come to the shelter around 10 a.m. to help us get started. We’ll work up an appetite and then around noon we will feed you a grilled lunch in appreciation of your hard work. Many hands make light work and it’s sure to be fun. Our annual meeting will be held at 1 p.m.
