In 2008 volunteers in America contributed 8 billion hours of service valued at $162 billion. In 2009 President Barack Obama signed into law the Serve America Act, which calls upon all Americans to address local needs through volunteer service. Mainers heeded that call and Maine now ranks 15th in the nation in volunteerism.

Those who are looking for an opportunity to volunteer in the Midcoast are invited to the Volunteer Job Fair on Friday, May 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 11 White St. in Rockland.

Many of the area’s historical and cultural organizations will be at the fair to share their mission and volunteer opportunities in a relaxed atmosphere. People of all ages are invited to come and explore their options for community service.

Whether one is looking for a one-time opportunity or a weekly commitment, whether someone wants to share enthusiasm or knowledge, the Volunteer Job Fair will include information on the perfect volunteer position.

Light refreshments will be served. For more information call Niki Dabrio at the Farnsworth Art Museum at 596-6457, ext. 143 or Susan Edmands at Montpelier, The General Henry Knox Museum at 354-8045.
