Dorothy O. Ryder, 68, died March 6, 2010, in Fairfax, Va. She became ill while visiting friends in Virginia.

Born in Augusta on Jan. 17, 1942, she was the daughter of Gladys and Carlton Oak. She grew up and attended public schools in Hallowell and was a member of the Girl Scouts.

She married Delbert Ryder in 1968.

Dorothy attended the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham and University of Massachusetts, Boston where she received a bachelor of science degree.

Dorothy worked for the U.S. Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Agency for 30 years. During that period she worked in Boston, San Francisco, Tucson and Washington, D.C. She retired in 1997 and moved back to Maine where she operated the Uniquely Maine Gift Shop for five years in Lincolnville.

Dorothy was an active member in the cancer societies and Midcoast Mastectomy Group and their Relay for Life, Road to Recovery and Reach to Recovery programs. She was also involved with the Lincolnville Women’s Club, YMCA and a quilting group. She was a board member of the Kno-Wal-Lin Auxiliary.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 13 at 1 p.m. at the Brooklawn Memorial Park at 2002 Congress St. in Portland. Friends are welcome to join with her family. There will also be a memorial service at the Bay Shore Baptist Church on Route 1 in Lincolnville on Saturday, May 22 at 11 a.m.
