The Medomak Valley junior varsity softball and baseball squads have kicked off their regular seasons and certainly have experienced a share of success thus far through two games.

The Panther softball team (2-0) has racked up victories over both Lincoln Academy of Newcastle and Belfast, while the Panther baseball team (1-1) has split games with the same Eagles and Lions.

Softball

At Belfast April 26, Medomak Valley made it look easy with a 12-0, five-inning victory over the Lions. Desiree Benner allowed only two hits and no walks, while striking out a whopping 14 batters in her work from the pitching circle. Lexi Nelligan pitched for Belfast, allowing five hits and 17 walks, with five strikeouts.

Jasmine Kauffman (2 doubles, two runs) led the Panther offense, while Benner (double), Charlene Wilbur (single), Danielle Hunt (single) and Maria Ennamorati (single) also contributed offensively. Katrina Lapham and Alexis Porter each had a hit for the Lions.

At Waldoboro April 23, Medomak Valley emerged victorious over visiting Lincoln Academy with a 13-1 decision. Benner pitched the win for the Panthers, allowing only one hit and three walks, with 13 strikeouts in the complete-game effort. Tara Gaunt pitched for the Eagles, scattering seven hits and 13 walks, with nine strikeouts.

Abby McGuire had two hits for Medomak Valley, while Kauffman, MacKenzie Belcher, Benner, Ennamorati and Hunt each added one hit. Merissa Look had the lone hit for Lincoln Academy.

Baseball

At Belfast April 26, Medomak Valley emerged victorious with a thrilling 11-8 victory in extra innings.

Ryan Ripley (4 earned runs, 4 strikeouts) tossed three innings for the Panthers, while Brandon Gresham (3 earned runs, 4 strikeouts) went 2 2/3 innings and Adam Lynch (no earned runs 4 strikeouts) the final 2 1/3 innings.

Top hitters for the Panthers were Gresham (2 singles, 2 runs), Robbie Griffin (4 runs, 2 hits, 2 steals), Brandon Soper (triple, double, single, stolen base, 2 RBIs, 3 runs), Lynch (single, 2 RBIs, 2 stolen bases), Gabe Delano (single, two RBIs), Ryan Merrifield (steal), Michael Kee (2 steals), Chris Parlin (run, 2 steals) and Vincent Vannah (double, 2 RBIs, stolen base).

Information for Belfast was unavailable.

The game was close before MVHS pulled ahead 8-4 in the top of the sixth inning. The Lions, however, scored four runs in the bottom of the stanza to tie the game. The score remained tied after seven innings and went to the eighth. In the top of the eighth, the Panthers scored three runs and kept Belfast from scoring in the bottom of the stanza to pull out the victory.
