Howard A. Welch Jr., 92, died March 27, 2010, at Togus Veterans Affairs Medical Center, after an extended illness.

Born in Rockland on Jan. 26, 1918, he was the son of the Rev. Howard A. Sr. and Martha Halvorsen Welch. He was educated in local schools.

He was a graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, and over the years studied at other institutions of higher education.

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and the D-Day Invasion at Normandy.

He worked several years as an electrical engineer with the Raytheon Corp. in Massachusetts.

Mr. Welch lived most of his life in Rockland, where he was a longtime member of the Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church.

He is survived by five cousins, June Bryant and her husband, Alfred, of The Villages, Fla., Leonard Welch of Massachusetts, Marion Leonhardt of California, Marilyn Cronin and her husband, Charles, of Massachusetts, Maine and Florida, and Ellsworth Welch of New York.

A graveside service with military honors to be held in August at Achorn Cemetery will be announced by the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home of Rockland.
