A local non-profit group will put on a fundraiser in the coming weeks in an effort to not only help some of their own take a trip to remember, but to feature a matchup on the hardwood of some of the Midcoast’s community leaders.

The Trekkers will host the second annual Trekkers Mayhem Basketball Game on Saturday, May 8 at 6 p.m. in the Georges Valley High School gymnasium.

This year’s contest, dubbed “Battle of the Badges,” will pit the Rockland Police/Fire/EMS against the Thomaston Police/Fire/EMS. Both teams will have members of their respective police, fire and emergency medical service department personnel come together for the exhibition basketball game.

Proceeds from the game will go to the Trekkers Class of 2012. Tickets are $5 per person or $20 per family. Money raised will help a group of Trekkers travel to Colorado where they will be involved in a project for Habitat for Humanity.

In addition to the fundraising basketball game, two box seats to an upcoming Boston Red Sox game are to be raffled off at the event. The tickets were donated by attorney James Brannan of Rockland, with raffle tickets being sold for the baseball tickets at the game for $2 each or six for $10.

With the funds gained from the event, the Trekkers Class of 2012 will take a trip to Colorado from July 29 through Aug. 12 where they will take part in a project for Habitat for Humanity, visiting an Indian reserve in New Mexico and spelunking, or cave exploring.

According to trekkersonline.com, the Trekkers are “a non-profit, outdoor-based mentoring program that connects caring adults with young people through expeditionary learning, community service and adventure-based education.”
