The 2010 Marshwood New England Classic youth wrestling championships took place a few weeks ago and yielded positive results for Midcoast teams.

And it proved to be a day to remember for a few local youngsters, in particular, who brought home individual championships.

Rockland Wrestling’s Connor McGonagle, Windjammer Wrestling’s Isaac Young II and Chris Weiss, along with Belfast’s Jacob Waterman and Jacob Racioppi, all secured individual titles in their respective weight classes in the event held April 3 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The New England event featured four divisions through numerous weight classes: Bantam, midget, novice and schoolboy.

More than 200 teams from across New England participated, including Rockland Wrestling, Windjammer Wrestling, Belfast and Medomak.

In the Bantam Division, Mid-Coast Youth finished 29th with 26 points, while Medomak finished 43rd with 14 points and Rockland Wrestling 47th out of 51 teams with nine points. The Marshwood Little Hawks won the division with 165.5 points.

In the Midget Division, Belfast finished in fifth place overall with a total of 75 points, while Rockland Wrestling earned a ninth-place finish with 56.5 points. Mid-Coast Youth finished 30th with 26 points, while Medomak finished 51st among 61 teams with 13 points. Berwick Youth Wrestling won the division with 117 points.

In the Novice Division, Windjammer Wrestling finished 23rd overall with a score of 39 points, while Belfast finished 39th out of 52 teams with 18 points. Massabesic Youth prevailed, winning the division with 117 points.

In the Schoolboy Division, Windjammer Wrestling placed 11th with 81 points, while Belfast finished 27th with 43 points. Belfast Champ finished 54th among 67 teams, amassing 10 points. West Warwick/Mayo Quanchi (R.I.) won the division with 168.5 points.

McGonagle’s victory was in the 65-pound Midget Division. McGonagle pinned Mid-Coast Youth’s Andrew Kelly at 1:36; defeated Newport Recreation’s Ben Widmann 8-2; and secured the New England title after defeating Dirigo Youth Wrestling’s Jon Wainwright 6-0.

Racioppi, competing in the 91-pound Midget Division, pinned Newport Recreation’s Lance Walch at the 0:26; pinned West Warwick’s Tyler Riggs at 1:55; and pinned Masco’s Harrison Shapiro at 2:58 to win the New England championship.

Waterman, competing in the 105-pound Midget Division, pinned Gaige Bedard of the Lebanon Little Die Hards at 2:29; defeated West Warwick’s Alex Christina 6-0; and won the New England title by pinning Skowhegan Youth Wrestling’s Cody Damon at 1:24.

Weiss, competing in the 111-pound Schoolboy Division, pinned Newport Recreation’s Nick Widmann at 1:30, pinned Downeast Wrestling Club’s Ricky Jamieson at 0:58 and defeated Belfast’s Brandon Waterman 5-4 to win the New England title.

Young, competing in the 121-pound Schoolboy Division, defeated Sanford Junior High’s Carl Eisenhower by majority decision 14-0; upended Chelmsford’s James Clausen 6-2; and captured the New England crown with a 14-0 majority decision victory over teammate Jared Gilbert.

Other local wrestlers who finished among the top four in their respective brackets, broken down by division, include:

Midget — Wyatt Staples, Belfast, 50-pound division (round robin), 4th place; Devin Ward, Rockland Wrestling, 56-pound division, 3rd place; Landon Nichols, Belfast, 60-pound division, 2nd place; Dawson Allen, Mid-Coast Youth, 62-pound division, 2nd place; Ben Ripley, Rockland Wrestling, 64-pound division, 3rd place; Noah Lang, Mid-Coast Youth, 67-pound division, 3rd place; Korbin Daniels, Medomak, 80-pound division, 3rd place; Elvis Smith, Rockland Wrestling, 93-pound division, 3rd place.
