Our pet pick of the week is Jake, a playful, lovable, goofy 2-year-old Rottweiler mix. Jake is a real sweetheart. He loves to play and his favorite toy, believe it or not, is a rock. He loves rocks. Jake isn’t picky about which rock. He’ll play with them all. He can keep himself entertained for hours with a nice, big, round rock. He likes to shovel them between his legs all across the yard. He’s amazingly gentle with them in his mouth. Jake needs a big yard to romp in (a rock garden a bonus). He’s good with most dogs but probably not with cats. He would make a fine family dog; however, because of his exuberance, size and his habit of kicking rocks around we recommend that any children be over the age of 5. Stop by the shelter and spend some time with Jake. Even if he isn’t the right dog for you, he is sure to put a smile on your face.

Our annual Blessing of the Animals, held on Saturday, April 10, was well attended with dogs of all shapes and sizes receiving individual blessings from the Rev. Michael Murphy. Faith and Amos, a sibling pair of greyhounds, Moose a Bichon Frise along with Murphy the Cockapoo, Snickers a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Beatrice the Sheepdog and Riley the Maine Coon Cat were just a few of the animals with their humans who attended the event. We were pleased to have students from the Grace Youth Center in Tenants Harbor and Youthlinks participate by helping shelter animals take part in the event and receive individual blessings of love and tender care. Thank you to the Rev. Michael Murphy and to all who participated in the event and who helped make the bake sale a wonderful success. The annual blessing continues to be a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the animals that share and enrich our lives.

Save the date: Celebrate Every Day is Tag Day by joining us at Shaw’s Supermarket in Rockland on Saturday, April 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. We will have our tag machine on site. You can purchase a personalized engraved I.D. tag for your pet, your keys, or your luggage or make an I.D. necklace for your sweetheart. We have a great assortment of colors and shapes to choose from. According to the American Humane Society only about 15 percent of dogs and 2 percent of cats who end up in shelters without an I.D. tag or microchip are reunited with their owners. We are encouraging pet owners to get their pets tagged and/or microchipped (available at the shelter) to increase a lost pet’s chance of getting home. Tags are only $7 each. All proceeds go directly to helping the animals in our care.
