Margaret E. Melgard, 95, died March 31, 2010, at her home in Punta Gorda, Fla. She was a longtime resident and teacher in Thomaston. Margaret was born in Presque Isle on June 3, 1914, and attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, where she met her husband of many years, Earl.

Until their retirement, they made their home in Thomaston. At age 40, Margaret, with her husband, got their pilots licenses and flew their own plane around the area. Margaret retired as a fourth-grade teacher from Lura Libby Elementary School in 1967. She and Earl have lived in Punta Gorda, Fla., since the early 70s. Margaret always loved to return to Thomaston for the Fourth of July parade, where she would meet many of her former students. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Margaret is survived by her four children, Peter who lives with his wife, Mildred, in Washington, Maine, Jean who lives with her husband, Jim, in Long Lake, Mich., and Punta Gorda, Fla., Stephen who lives with his wife, Mary, in Washington, Maine, and Punta Gorda, Fla., and Andrea who lives with her husband, David, in Cohasset, Mass., and Venice, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and her companion, Ronald Garrett of Punta Gorda, Fla.

She will be interred with her husband at the Thomaston Cemetery this summer when arrangements can be made.
