Police warned the public Thursday morning about a widespread telephone scam that was ongoing.

Residents were reportedly receiving telephone calls, including on their cell phones, and e-mail saying that Machias Savings Bank needed people to provide information in order to reactivate their debit or ATM cards.

Rockland Police Sgt. Donald Finnegan said people receiving the calls should simply hang up.

Machias Savings Bank said the calls and e-mails began Wednesday afternoon but were continuing Thursday. The bank said its fraud and security divisions were working on the matter but recommended people provide no information to callers.

The area codes of the incoming calls came from Texas and California.
