Eighty citizen soldiers were honored March 27 by a group of volunteers from the Midcoast.

Members of the Rockland Rotary, Rockland Kiwanis, veterans groups and Boy Scouts were stationed in the lobby of the Samoset Resort in Rockport to welcome members of the 286th Combat Services Support Battalion. The Guard members and their families were in town for a conference to help them reintegrate into society after their latest tour of duty.

The 286th spent a year in Afghanistan, returning at the start of the year.

As each solider entered the Samoset lobby, the local greeters gave them rounds of applause and many shook the hands of the Guard members.

Rockland Mayor Deborah McNeil and State Rep. Edward Mazurek along with Councilor Eric Hebert were among those greeting the soldiers.

The greeters manned the lobby from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., which was the check-in time for Guard members. The conference was to run through March 28.
