The University of Southern Maine School of Music is throwing a birthday bash Thursday, April 8 in honor of Stephen Sondheim’s 80th birthday and several Midcoast students will be performing.

Under the direction of Edward Reichert, current USM musical theater majors will be joined by more than a dozen singers from the USM Opera Workshop to celebrate the more than 50 years of work from one of America’s most prolific composers of musical theater. Joining them as special guests are a number of professionals/former musical theater majors and six members of the school’s voice faculty.

The concert will take place 7:30 p.m. at Corthell Concert Hall on the USM Gorham campus. Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for senior citizens and USM staff and $5 for students. For reservations, call 780-5555.

Songs will be performed from more than a dozen musicals Sondheim wrote both music and lyrics for. The program also will include several songs from the 52 songs written by other composers that Sondheim has said he wished he had written including numbers by Irving Berlin, Cy Coleman and George Gershwin.

Musical theater majors performing include Roger Marcotte of Rockland. Other undergraduate and graduate students from the Opera Workshop, music and/or theater majors include David Delano of Belfast, Travis Grant of Waldoboro and Jesse Wakeman of Belfast.
