Robert C. Hilton Sr. of Newcastle died the morning of March 23, 2010, (his 82nd birthday) at the Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. Born in Newcastle on March 23, 1928, he was the son of Clarence and Beatrice (Hodgkins) Hilton.

Robert was born and raised in Newcastle. He attended local schools and graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1947. While at Lincoln Academy, he excelled at many sports including basketball, baseball, track and most notably cross-country. He was part of the state champion cross-country team in 1945. While at Lincoln Academy, he started working for Eben Hagget at his milk farm in Newcastle. He started delivering bottles of milk both before and after school. After graduation he went to work for him full time, and soon became his head herdsman. He worked for Eben for over 30 years, and after Eben’s death, he took over running the farm. He ran it for several years before his first retirement. A few years later he went back to work and continued for another 10 years.

He had a lifelong love of professional sports and loved all the New England teams, but especially the Boston Red Sox. He always had a vegetable garden, and in his retirement loved gardening of all varieties. Also in his retirement, he found a great love for golf.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Rachael C. Hilton, as well as their daughter, Anne M. Hilton. He was also predeceased by his brother, John Hilton and a sister, Dorothy Nelson.

He is survived by his wife, whom he married in 1999, Sandra Hilton of Newcastle; three children, Sara Caron and her husband, Daniel, of Portland, Robert C. Hilton Jr. and his wife, Elayn, of Newcastle and Eliza Tibbetts and her husband, Gary, of Nobleboro; two stepchildren, Michael Lessner of Damariscotta and Andrew Lessner and his wife, Sarah, of Waldoboro; eight grandchildren, Jason Leahan and his wife, Betsy, Amanda Chaisson and her husband, Dave, Ashley Onorato and her husband, Isaiah, Devin Caron, Elise Caron, Gary Tibbetts Jr. and his wife, Andrea, Valerie Tibbetts and Shawn Tibbetts; one brother, Ralph Hilton of New Hampshire; 10 great-grandchildren; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A time of visitation will be held Saturday, March 27 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St. in Damariscotta. A service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
