Gilles “Papa” Fontaine, 65, loving father, brother, father-in-law, grandfather and friend, died March 23, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born May 26, 1944, in Riviere-Bleue, Quebec, to Gerard and Odelie (Michaud) Fontaine. Always known as a strong, hard working Frenchman, Gilles’ career first began in the woods where he worked as a lumberjack for many years. He later changed his line of work to construction, which he proudly worked at until his retirement in 2006. Gilles was predeceased by his parents, Gerard and Odelie; his brother, Emile; his sisters, Fernande and Therese; and his sister-in-law, Lise and brother-in-law, William Doiron.

He is survived by his children, John and companion, Kerri, of Lewiston, Treena and her husband, Ryan Carrier, of Madawaska, Gilles-Allen of Rockland, Sreena and her husband, Kenny Willey, of Thomaston, Logan and fiancee, Amy Levesque, of Madawaska, Pomphile and his wife, Colleen, of Union, Seth of Rockland, Edal of Amherst, Mass., and Jebadiah of Rockland; his grandchildren, Bronte Fontaine, Tanner, Dimitri and Dominic Carrier, Joshua Willey, Noah and Nicholas Fontaine, and Isabel Fontaine; three brothers, Yvon and his wife, Nicole, of Riviere-Bleue, Quebec, Jean Paul and wife, Jackie, of Sarnia, Ontario, Georges and his wife, Pierrette, of Saint-Louis-Du-Ha!-Ha!, Quebec; three sisters, Armande of Saint Basile, New Brunswick, Jeannine and her husband, Romeo Nadeau, of Val Lambert, New Brunswick, Rejeanne and her lifetime companion, Darcie Therrien, of Saint Basile, New Brunswick; and his sister-in-law, Monique Fontaine of La Tuque, Quebec.

As per Gilles’ request, there will be no visitation or services.

“We love you and you are alive in our hearts and in our memories,” Gilles’ family said.

Arrangements are with the Lajoie Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
