Winning, as the old adage goes, never gets old. If that is the case, then it is likely the wonderful feeling for the Georges Valley High School girls soccer team has not worn off more than four months after winning its first state championship.

That feeling was reaffirmed Tuesday night at the school, as the team once again came together to remember its historic run through the Class C playoffs and into the Buccaneer memory books as the team’s championship banner was unveiled in a small ceremony.

Members of the team also received jackets for their efforts, which were purchased largely through donations from area businesses. There was also a slideshow featuring many action photos of the Buccaneers’ from the early moments of the season to the state title game.

Wrapping up the ceremony was the formal presentation of the trophy to the school, as veteran Georges Valley coach Darryl Townsend handed over the state Class C championship trophy and ball to principal Rob Beverage. The trophy will now be on display in the school’s trophy case, along with the Bucs many other sports accomplishments through the years.

Georges Valley also had an extra jacket made for Bob Watts, who is a longtime supporter of the program and the team’s bus driver.

Last fall, in the Western Class C playoffs, No. 2 Georges Valley defeated No. 7 Dirigo of Dixfield 1-0 in overtime in the quarterfinals after three rounds of penalty kicks, upended No. 3 Hall-Dale of Farmingdale 1-0 in the semifinals, won the regional crown over second-seeded Waynflete of Portland 2-1 and wrapped up their first state title with a 1-0 win over Eastern champion Orono in a game played at Hampden Academy.

The 2009 Bucs included Kate Lee, Amelia Ausplund, Jill Bradbury, Jessica Veilleux, Erika Brooks, Holly Ames-Allan, Danielle Frye, Kristen Sawyer, Bethany Snow, Jennifer Denault, Katherine Waters, Kennadi Grover, Ashley Thompson, Kristen Rickard, Jaime Brooks, Rachel Frye, Natalie Atwood, Katlyn Rich, Audrey Brooks, Meredith Joyce, Lizzie Lombardo, Amy Thompson and Chelsea Philbrook. The team is coached by Townsend and Dave Banda.
