The Island Institute announced the first two recipients of Island Voices awards designed to provide experience and support for year-round island residents who want to make a sustained commitment to island community and economic development.

Kathy Warren from Vinalhaven has received $500 to assist her in participating in the Maine Development Foundation’s Leadership Maine program. Ellen Mahoney of Peaks Island has received $500 to help her attend the Institute for Civic Leadership in Portland.

Recognizing that committed and respected leadership is the single most valuable ingredient that distinguishes successful island communities, the Island Institute has launched this pilot program to draw upon its strong track record of identifying and working with local island leaders, and to cultivate new island voices.

Through The Working Waterfront, the Island Institute’s newspaper, and other publications, these emerging leaders will have the opportunity to express their perspectives on improving the vitality of island community life and economic sustainability.
