Starting April 1, the Waldoboro Food Pantry will extend its hours on the first Thursday of each month. The food pantry, housed in the lower-level parish hall of the Waldoboro United Methodist Church, will be open from 1 to 6 p.m., as it also is on the third Thursday of each month.

The pantry is led by Ellee Simons and is sponsored by the Waldoboro Lions Club, as well as area churches, organizations and individuals. The Rev. Michael Murphy organized and directed the food pantry for many years until his retirement in late 2009.

During the 2009-2010 winter months, between 50 and 65 households from Waldoboro and Bremen used the food pantry each Thursday it was open, according to Simons.

On the third Thursday, a community lunch sponsored by the Methodist church and Broad Bay Congregational UCC is held in the parish hall from noon to 1 p.m. The Waldoboro United Methodist Church is located at 93 Friendship St.
