Appleton, Hope and Lincolnville have hired Judith Harvey to be their next superintendent of schools, beginning July 2.

Harvey has most recently been employed by Maine School Administrative District 36 in Livermore Falls, but she is familiar to the Midcoast having previously been superintendent of schools for SAD 50, which covered Cushing, St. George and Thomaston, from 2002 to 2009.

In February 2009, Harvey withdrew her application for the top post of the then new Regional School Unit 13, which took over operations of SADs 5 and 50 last July. She was one of only two applicants under consideration for the post at the new consolidated district, which serves the towns of Cushing, Owls Head, Rockland, St. George, South Thomaston and Thomaston.

School Union 69, comprising Appleton, Hope and Lincolnville school committees, voted unanimously March 4 to employ Harvey for three days a week during the school year at a per diem rate of $400. Her one-year contract may be extended if circumstances warrant, the district said.

Harvey, who has also been a middle school principal, as well as learning results coordinator in Augusta, and a teacher of gifted and talented in Wiscasset, holds a certificate of advanced study in educational leadership from the University of Southern Maine and a master’s degree in exceptionality, also from USM. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from George Washington University in 1971.

Prior to working in education, she was employed in the banking industry and operated her own business.

According to a news release from Union 69, Harvey has been characterized as a leader who can assess problems quickly and pursue solutions effectively.

“At the same time she builds consensus with staff who consider her a ‘team player,'” the release said.

Harvey replaces interim Superintendent Dave Wiggin, who returned to Union 69 in March 2009 following the untimely death of Superintendent Deborah Stewart.

Wiggin had formerly served as superintendent for Union 69 from July 2002 until he retired in 2007.
