Jean Brooks Shackelford, 91, of Damariscotta died March 22, 2010, at the Lincoln Home after a long illness.

Jean was born Aug. 30, 1918, in Cambridge, Mass., to Philip and Blanche (Pray) Brooks. She grew up in Framingham Center, Mass. Jean was a 1940 graduate of Simmons College in Boston, earning her bachelor of science degree in library science, after which she was a librarian at Clark University in Worcester, Mass.

She married Charles H. Shackelford in 1942 and they lived for many years in the towns of Hamilton and Wenham, Mass., raising their children there. Jean was an active volunteer at the towns’ library and garden club as well as The Wenham Village Improvement Society.

Jean and her husband, Charlie, retired to Damariscotta in 1977 where they pursued their hobbies and their love of the outdoors. She was an avid tennis player, an excellent cook, and enjoyed volunteering for the Skidompha Library and Miles Memorial Hospital League. Some will remember Jean for her many years at the Firehouse Dress Shop on the Bristol Road.

Jean will be remembered for her sincerity, her love of animals, her wonderful sense of humor and those sparkling blue eyes. She was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jean was predeceased by her husband, Charlie, and their son, Peter.

She is survived by her two daughters, Susan Wager of Branchport, N.Y., and Ann Silva of Union; her son-in-law, Stan Silva of Union; four grandchildren, Natalie Pashoukos, Christopher Wager, Tim Silva and Katy Silva; three great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Mia and Ethan; her brother and sister-in-law, P. Preston and Louise Brooks; as well as three nephews and their families.

A memorial service for the family will be held at a later date.
