Christopher Benner turned himself in to Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy John Palmer at the Knox County Sheriff’s Office on March 22 at 10:30 a.m.

Benner is a suspect in an alleged assault on a 63-year-old Nobleboro man that occurred Jan. 19 in the Hannaford Supermarket parking lot in Waldoboro.

Benner has been charged with aggravated assault, said Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde.

Labombarde said it is believed that the January assault occurred over the suspect’s truck being illegally parked in a handicap spot at Hannaford Supermarket. The police chief said the victim required stitches and sustained a head injury.

Following a press release issued March 19, the Waldoboro Police Department received numerous tips from the public. The tips were investigated throughout the weekend by members of the Waldoboro Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Thomaston Police Department.

Labombarde said those agencies kept the pressure on Benner all weekend.

Bail was set for Benner at $75,000 surety or $5,000 cash.

“I would like to thank everyone who assisted in this matter,” Labombarde said in a prepared statement.
