Jeffrey C. Thurston, 59, of Hollis Center died at his home March 14, 2010, with his wife, Carol, by his side, following a brief illness.

Jeff was born in Rockland on June 13, 1950, the son of the late Jason W. and Muriel Adams Thurston. He attended local schools, graduating from Rockland District High School in 1968.

After his graduation, Jeff served as an intelligence operations specialist in the U.S. Air Force during the conflict in Southeast Asia.

Jeff returned to Maine following his military service and attended the University of Maine at Orono and Beal College in Bangor, where he studied political science and data management.

He married Carol Clough, formerly of York, on June 29, 1985.

Jeff worked as a computer programmer for more than 30 years, first at Bates Fabric, then at Bank of New England, and finally at Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. Later he worked in retail sales for Deering Lumber Company in Biddeford and in maintenance for the Sweetser Children’s Home in Saco.

Jeff’s favorite pastime was, in his own words, to “stay home and putter.” He and Carol spent many years restoring, upgrading and building a barn for their antique cape in Naples. When the job was completed, they sold the Naples cape and purchased an 1850s country home in Hollis Center. Jeff was restoring that home when his health began to fail. He was always eager to help friends, family members and former associates with their home-improvement projects. Jeff also liked camping with his wife and family; one of his favorite places was Mt. Battie in Camden Hills. He also enjoyed an occasional dart game with friends.

Jeff was predeceased by his parents.

In addition to his wife of nearly 25 years, Carol C. Thurston of Hollis Center, he is survived by his daughter, Shannon Thurston and grandson Connor, both of Florida; his brother, Eric “Rick” Thurston and his wife, Sue, of South Thomaston; a sister, Marcia Clark, and her husband, Jimi, of Cushing; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

An informal visitation will be held beginning at 1 p.m. Monday, March 22, with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home on Portland Road in Buxton. The Rev. Ron Sargent of Hollis Center Baptist Church will officiate, and burial will be at a later date.

Donations in Jeff’s memory can be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (www.stjude.org).
