While the top two overall seeds fell March first in the semifinals, no one in the gymnasium was disappointed with Monday’s league final between No. 3 Wiscasset and No. 4 Stonescape as the First Baptist Church of Waldoboro Men’s Basketball League championship was up for grabs at the church.

The two teams proved they deserved to be there, as both Wiscasset and Stonescape competed in a hard-fought, physical and competitive contest in an effort to crown this year’s league champion.

And in the end when the final horn sounded, it was No. 3 Wiscasset who emerged as league champion with a 77-64 win over Stonescape.

Games consisted of two 20-minute halves and a running clock, with the final two minutes of the first half and second half played under standard clock play. Wiscasset held a narrow 34-31 lead after the first 20 minutes of play.

Conrad Griffin and Chris Haven each dropped in 20 points to lead Wiscasset (10-2), while Jamie Jones and Chris Hersom each added nine; Eric Matzell, eight; Jason Dighton, six; Joe Gallant, four; and Matt Hinckley, one.

Mike Geisler led Stonescape (9-3) with 16 points, wile Mike Leighton added 14; Brad Scott, 12; Kurt Snyder, seven; Monte Haynes, five; and Dante Ravelli and Todd Snyder, both four.

Wiscasset netted 18-of-25 (72 percent) from the foul line, while Stonescape converted 9-of-14 (64 percent).

The game started off a back-and-forth affair, as the game was knotted at 17-17 with just under nine minutes to play in the first half, prompting a Stonescape timeout. Stonescape then scored six straight points and went on an 8-2 run, giving them a 25-19 edge. Wiscasset then outscored Stonescape 15-8 over the final seven minutes of the first half.

Wiscasset extended that lead to as many as 10 early on in the second quarter, while Stonescape made a furious rally and closed the gap to 48-47 with roughly 10 minutes to play. Then with roughly five minutes left to play, Haven converted back-to-back three-point plays to push the Wiscasset lead to 64-54 with 4:15 remaining.

Wiscasset went to stall-ball over the final two minutes of play, and netted 7-of-10 free throws over that time to keep Stonescape at bay. Wiscasset then put the exclamation point on the game with back-to-back fast break dunks from Haven and Griffin with under a minute to play.

No. 3 Wiscasset defeated No. 6 Boothbay Yacht 72-51 and No. 2 Miles Memorial Hospital 69-53 to reach Monday’s championship game, while No. 4 Stonescape defeated No. 5 Curtis Construction 51-43 and No. 1 Mid-Knight Auto 69-65 to reach the league final.
