The new owners of Dean’s Flower Shop in Rockland said they plan to follow in the footsteps and traditions of the previous owner.

Stephany Lindsey and Janetta Marino started as employees at the flower shop and have now become owners. They purchased the Old County Road business around Feb. 1.

The previous owner, Jon Dean, had run the business, which was started by his father, for 35 years. Dean’s has served the Rockland area for 60 years altogether.

“The idea is to keep what he has built for us and the community,” said Marino. “We want it to be the same experience that they had gotten from him.”

Marino has worked for the company for two years as a floral designer. Lindsey joined the business six months ago as a part-time driver. She said she had a bookkeeping business before, but lost some clients due to the tough economy.

“People are happy to see me now compared to what it used to be,” she said. “This is what I’d rather be doing.”

Lindsey was born and raised in Rockland. She lives in Rockport with her husband and two daughters.

Marino is a native of San Francisco. She said she moved to Maine five years ago to be closer to her grandchildren and she loves the state, the seasons and the people.

For the most part the business is a two-person operation, though the owners sometimes pull in extra help for big holidays such as Valentine’s Day. They also have family members and friends who help.

Dean’s delivers flowers for all occasions including funerals, anniversaries, graduations, birthdays and holidays. It offers plants, flowers, gift baskets and stuffed animals. The new owners said the company may expand its product lines and its delivery area.

It currently covers a 10-mile radius from Spruce Head to Camden.
