Virginia J. Brown, 89, of Vinalhaven died Feb. 22, 2010, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport after a brief illness. Born in North Haven, she was the daughter of Walter F. and Vernita (Beverage) Joyce. She was a 1939 graduate of North Haven High School. Mrs. Brown had resided in Andover, Mass., El Paso, Texas, spent one year in Hawaii with her son, Edwin, and Bangor before moving to Vinalhaven in 1990. While living in Bangor, she worked for many years at Miller’s Restaurant until it closed. She loved to knit and crochet and donated her handcrafted sweaters, hats and mittens to the families of those serving in the U.S. military. Mrs. Brown enjoyed planting and tending her crop of sweet peas each year.

She is survived by her daughter, Irene Martin and her husband, Robert, of Vinalhaven; two sons, Edwin Brown and his wife, Bonnie, of Mukilteo, Wash., and Roland Brown of El Paso, Texas; eight grandchildren, Roland, Edwin, Sharon, Patty, Joyce, Robert, Christopher and Timothy; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Harold Joyce.

A private graveside service will be held in the spring at Brown’s Head Cemetery in Vinalhaven. Memorial donations may be made to Vinalhaven Eldercare, P.O. Box 624, Vinalhaven, ME 04863. Arrangements are with the Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Camden.
