Susann B. Conover, 68, wife of George A. Conover, died unexpectedly Feb. 21, 2010, at her home.

Born in Bayonne, N.J., on June 21, 1941, she was the daughter of Capt. William J. and Mary Shepard Ottervanger. She attended Bayonne schools and spent a major part of her youth in Toms River, N.J., as well.

While raising four children, she worked her way through college, earning her nursing degree from Ocean County College in Toms River. She also performed high tech private duty care for several long-term patients in their homes.

Susann’s tenacity during this period was exemplified as she repaired her own car and did construction and renovation projects in her own home.

As a registered nurse, she was employed many years as patient coordinator with Visiting Homemakers Services of Ocean County.

On July 3, 1981, she married George A. Conover in Toms River, N.J. They resided in Point Pleasant, N.J., until moving to Cushing in 1996.

Always active in her community, Susann was a member of the Cushing Historical Society, volunteering often for various projects. She was chairwoman of the Building and Grounds Committee for the town, and volunteered as a board member with Compeer.

She loved gardening, and at one time her home was part of a Georges River Land Trust Garden Tour. She particularly enjoyed the many friendships and camaraderie found in being a “Mermaid” with the Mermaid Swim Club of Waldoboro. The St. Patrick’s Day parties she hosted at her home were legendary.

Susann was known for her great sense of humor, wonderful laugh and willingness to help anyone in need. She often volunteered her nursing skills to neighbors and friends in need. More than anything, she found fulfillment in doting on her family and grandchildren.

Other than her parents, Susann was predeceased by one son, Bobby Coker.

She is survived by her husband, George, of Cushing; two sons, Capt. Joseph M. Coker and his wife, Denise, of Petersberg, N.J., and Brian J. Coker of Point Pleasant, N.J.; four daughters, Dr. Wendy A. Rogers and her husband, Thomas, of Point Pleasant, N.J., Bonnie J. Boswell of Clifton, Tenn., Cindy A. Dziemian and her husband, David, of Bayonne, N.J., and Elaine G. Conover and Gregory DeFoe of Neptune, N.J.; one brother, William J. Ottervanger Jr. and his wife, Martie, of North Palm Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Perry, Kelly, David, Jodie, Eric, twins Adam and Savannah, Emily and Findlay; as well as several nieces and nephews.

No services will be held at this time. Arrangements are with the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home in Rockland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
