On Saturday, Feb. 27 the PenBay Art Club will host a Java Gala for Guatemala. The artsy silent auction and coffeehouse, complete with live music, will run from 6 to 9 p.m. at High Mountain Hall, 5 Mountain St./Route 52. A $10 donation is suggested at the door.

The PenBay Art Club is a group of five Camden Hills Regional High School seniors. In April, they will be collaborating with girls their age who attend the Safe Passage program (safepassage.org) in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Safe Passage works with the poorest at-risk children of families working in the Guatemala City garbage dump.

The joint art project will be to design and create a permanent tile installation for the main building. One of the primary goals for this trip is to forge a permanent connection between teens from this community and teens in the Safe Passage community via art.

The PenBay Art Club is three-quarters of the way to meeting their goal, thanks to the generosity and support of the community, and the students invite everyone to attend the Java Gala.
